LESSONS

Group Lessons are hugely beneficial for all musicians. Take the tools and skills you learn in your private lessons, and use them to help learn how to play in a group setting with other like-minded musicians! All ensembles and group lessons are set up so students are matched with each other by similar age, ability and musical interests. Take your playing and musicianship to the next level by trying out a group lesson!

ROCK BAND PROGRAM

Rock Band at JSMS is the premier spot on the South Shore for young musicians that want to play music with other like-minded musicians. Start a band that has dedicated weekly rehearsals with one of our Rock Band coaches, learn cover songs, write your own music, how to promote your band and music, book shows, and play live gigs! Students are matched based on age, skill-level, and musical interests, all in an effort to make sure that potential band members are the best fit possible for each other. The goal for groups in the JSMS Rock Band Program is to learn how to function completely on their own as a band in a professional and fun way.

$40/60min rehearsal, billed monthly for the number of rehearsals you have that month

Rock Band Prep

Rock Band Prep is a fun introduction to the JSMS Rock Band Program, designed for musicians ages 8–12 who are ready to experience what it’s like to be part of a band. Throughout this session, students will learn popular cover songs, explore the fundamentals of songwriting, build confidence practicing their individual parts, and develop the skills needed to rehearse and make music together as an ensemble. Along the way, they’ll discover common chord progressions, strengthen their listening and collaboration skills, and gain a solid musical foundation while having fun with their peers. The session concludes with a performance opportunity at a JSMS Recital, giving students the chance to share what they’ve learned in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Junior Virtuosos is the premier group class for your child to get a great introduction to all things music! Classes are designed to get children making music with others all while learning about the foundations of music. Students will learn how to sing and use their voices in a healthy way, acquire basic piano skills, get introduced to reading music notation, and so much more! Junior Virtuosos is a great way for younger students to creatively explore music, while older students can take on leadership opportunities and learn something new along the way. Junior Virtuosos is scheduled for 12-week sessions and concludes with an exciting short performance for friends and family on the final day of class!

Broadway Kids

Broadway Kids is a 12-week musical theatre class designed for students ages 9-12 who love to sing, perform, and tell stories through music. In a supportive and collaborative environment, students will explore songs from famous Broadway musicals while developing healthy vocal technique, stage presence, character interpretation, and performance confidence. Throughout the workshop, participants will build their musical and theatrical skills through group activities, creative expression, and ensemble singing. The session concludes with an informal performance opportunity for family and friends, giving students the chance to celebrate their growth and share what they’ve learned.

PRE-k Music

If you have a young child at home who keeps tapping on the table, singing all day long, or banging on the pots and pans, then Pre-K Music is for them! Your aspiring young musician will learn the basics of rhythm, movement, reading music notation and most of all, music-making! Students will spend time singing different songs, exploring different families of instruments and playing music both individually and with a group. The final session will culminate with an exciting short “informance” for friends and family!

Ages 3-5

Songwriting Workshop

Songwriting Workshop is designed for students in grades 8&up who are interested in exploring the creative process of writing original music. Led by JSMS instructor and Berklee College of Music songwriting graduate Heston Hall, this workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of songwriting through a supportive and collaborative environment. Participants will explore songwriting techniques, chord progressions, lyric writing, song structure, and creative approaches to developing their own musical ideas. By the end of the workshop, each student will have written and refined an original song while gaining tools and confidence they can continue to use in their own musical journey.
